Nir means without, jala means water. Nirjala Ekadasi fasting, as the name implies, is fasting without even consuming water. Therefore, devotees of this Ekadasi are a day of fasting that should not even drink water throughout the day.
Interestingly, Nirjala Ekadasi is also known as Bhima Ekadasi or Pandava Ekadasi. This is because all the five Pandavas observed this fast. But only Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers, was able to observe this fast in full.
It is also known as Bhimasena Ekadasi as Beaman, who is very hungry and overeats, observes this fast well. Ekadasi that comes during the month of June is called Nirjala Ekadasi.
It is hoped that those who are unable to fast on other Ekadasi days will be able to observe the Nirjala Ekadasi fast and reap the blessings of the other 23 Ekadasi fasts. This year Ekadasi Tithi starts on June 10 at 3.16 am and ends on June 11 at 2.00 am.
