International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day has been celebrated on June 21, 2015, following the launch of the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice originating in India.
The Prime Minister of India, in his 2014 UN speech, recommended June 21.
This is because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
Following this initial proposal, the UN adopted a draft resolution entitled “Yoga Day” in 2014. These suggestions were convened by the Indian delegation.
The Reserve Bank of India has issued a 10 rupee commemorative coin to mark International Yoga Day 2015. In April 2017, the UN Postal Administration (UNPA) issued stamps of 10 asanas on a single sheet to mark International Yoga Day.
First International Yoga Day:
The first International Yoga Day was observed around the world on 21 June 2015. The Ministry of AYUSH has made the necessary arrangements in India.
35,985 people, including dignitaries from 84 countries, performed 21 asanas (yoga asanas) for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi.
Became the largest yoga class ever conducted and the largest number – 84-participating countries.
Similar days have been held in cities in India and around the world every year since then.
Yoga Day in Chennai:
DMK Chennai East District Secretary, Hon’ble Minister for Hindu Religious & charitable endowments Mr.P.K.Sekarbabu, on his advice, Chennai Corporation celebrated the International Yoga Day this year at Anna Nagar West J Block, Ward 104, Zone 8.
Engraved the word ‘Dravidian model‘ in English on the T-shirt to illustrate Dravidian model as per Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s policy.
Villivakkam constituency MLA Mr. A. Vetrialagan B.E, M.B.A, M.L.A was the special guest at the event. He is the grandson of Prof.K.Anbazhagan, who was the Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu in the cabinet of Honourable Kalaignar
He was also the Financial Trustee of the Pachaiyappa Foundation from 2009 – 2012. He is currently a member of the Senate of the University of Chennai.
He is an entrepreneur, educator and social entrepreneur and he is also state Joint secretary for commerce wing – DMK
The event was presided over by Ward Councilor Mr. T.V.Shemmozhi MC, who made arrangements including T-shirts and yoga mats for approximately 100 peoples.
Mr.Koo.Pee.Jain MC, Chairman-8th Zonal Committee and 104th DMK Circle Secretaries Mr.cho.Murugesan, Mr.P.Logubabu and Mr. J.Thangaraj were present on the occasion.
Chennai Metro Water Area-Engineer Mr. Suresh, Chennai Corporation Assistant Engineer Mr.Ashok, sanitary Officer Mr.Prabhu and Sanitary Inspector Mrs. Meena were present.
Instructors Mrs. Mallika and Mrs. Sangeetha coordinated the program. President, Secretary and other members of the J-Block Association were also present in the event.
The program started at 06:00 am and ended with a few hours of yoga practice and a speech by the MLA.
