The Chennai Corporation is planning to renovate the Marina beach.
Chennai’s Marina Beach on the Bay of Bengal is the longest beach in India and the second longest in the world.
About 12 kilometers long, this main stretch of sand stretches from Besant Nagar in the south to Fort St. George in the north.
Like most of the British government officials who ruled colonial India, he did not escape the heat of Madras by going to the Western Ghats.
Instead he laid out long walkways called the Promenade and named it the ‘Marina’ in 1884.

Before starting discussions with other relevant departments, to come up with a theme,
Officials have sought technical assistance from landscape architects, a senior corporation official said.
As part of the beautification projects undertaken across the city by the civic body, one of the city’s biggest attractions, the six-km stretch along the marina, is being constructed.
The civic body has recently taken up small projects like an artificial waterfall and a rock fountain near the statue of Labour.
“The theme will be finalized by the end of this month,” said a Special Projects Department official.
After finalizing the theme, in consultation with other departments including Highways, CMDA and Metro Rail,
Officials said to discuss the possibilities and ensure that the timing does not interfere with the ongoing projects of other departments.

It cannot be taken for granted and there is absolutely no room for error. We must also ensure that there are no Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) violations.
We don’t want to rush the project,” a senior corporation official told The New Indian Express.
As the civic body undertakes landscaping and other development initiatives,
Smart kiosks designed and procured for marina vendors are still unused,
Vendors claim that smart pushcarts are designed without consulting them.
Based on the size and design, the carts are not made for people standing for long periods of time, vendors said.
In 2017, the Corporation developed Marina and Elliots Beaches at a cost of Rs 29 crore, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, under the ‘Swadesh Darshan’ scheme.
The central government has allocated more funds and undertaken beautification work.
