Temple a day-Thirukovilur

Where is the Universal Perumal Temple located?
Ulagalanda Perumal Temple (Trivikrama Perumal) at Tirukovilur in Kallakurichi district in Tamil Nadu serves the devotees under Sri Chakra Vimana. Thondai is the 43rd Divya Desam of the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desams. This place is said to be Tirupati in middle country.

Mahabali Chakraborty

Mahabali Chakraborty, who was born in the Asura clan, was a rat in his previous birth, who realized the good governance of the country.

Then a lamp that was going out in a Shiva temple was triggered by the tip of a mouse’s nose and the lamp started to burn brightly.

Lord Shiva blessed that rat who did good deeds without even knowing it, to be reborn as the country’s glorifying emperor.

He himself was born as Mahabali Chakravarti in the next birth. The good deeds he did to his countrymen took him to the highest level.

In this situation, Mahabali offered to conduct a Velvi for the welfare of the country.

Knowing this, the Devas thought that if he had done many good deeds and completed this Vellavi Mahabali, he who belonged to the Asura clan might attain Indrapadavi.

They went to Lord Vishnu to stop it. He may cause great danger to us gods.

Therefore, they prayed that his desire should be stopped. How jealous of these gods.

Mahavishnu thought that they came to me for help so that they would not be in danger because of him.

However, he offered to help the gods as it was his duty to protect them.

At the same time, he was determined to make the world know about the greatness of Mahabali. Lord Vishnu took Vamana avatar (dwarf) for that.

He was three feet tall and went to the Velvi road run by Mahabali. Mahabali welcomed him and tried to give him alms.

But knowing that it was Lord Vishnu who had come, Sukracharya, the guru of the Asura clan, said to Mahabali, “I have doubts about the Antananar who has come.

It seems to me that he may be an avatar of Tirumal. So don’t be in a hurry to donate,” he advised.

Mahabali was overwhelmed with joy. “Master! If it is an avatar of Tirumal who has come to me for alms,

What can be more important to me?” After saying that, without stopping, he took Kamandalam and poured water and offered to give alms.

Knowing that he could no longer be stopped, Sukracharya took the form of a Thumpi (beetle) and entered the Kamandala and blocked the way of water.

Seeing this, Vamana took a blade of grass and stabbed it at the water-filled beetle. Shukracharya was blinded by this.

Mahabali Chakravarthy poured water and gave alms. Then he told Vamana to measure and take the land that belongs to them.

Vamanara, who was waiting for this, rose from dwarf form to heaven. Seeing this, Mahabali Chakravarti stood in amazement.

The towering Vamana “measured the earth with the first step and the heavens with the second step”. Then to Mahabali, “Emperor! I have measured both worlds in two feet.

Where to place the third step?” he asked. ‘Lord! Put the third blow on my head,’ he said, kneeling on the ground and bowing down.

Maha Vishnu also placed his third blow on Mahabali’s head and pushed him to the underworld, continuing ‘O Mahabali! You made your country prosperous by your good governance.

So all the benefits you got gave you a raise. Now, by the gift you have given me, you will be so special that the whole world will admire it.’

According to the legend, the scene of Malavan standing with his legs raised is the source of inspiration in the sanctum sanctorum of this temple.
