Causes & symptoms of constipation in children

Causes & symptoms

Children, especially young children, are still in the developmental stage. One of the most common problems among children is related to their bowel movements.

This can cause widespread constipation among children. Most young children become constipated in the early years. Most of the time it is temporary and harmless.

Because the passage through the rectum is difficult, the child may face difficulty in passing stool normally.

Certain actions and approaches may lead to temporary complications in the child’s regular bowel movements. Let us know about the causes & symptoms of constipation.

causes & symptoms

1. Prolonged Retention: A common reason for this condition is when a child holds a stool for a long time due to fear of pain, not taking a break from playing, and discomfort in using a public toilet.

2.Toilet training problems: If parents start toilet training for children early, the child can learn to hold the stool without defecating on its own. This can then lead to the problem of uncontrolled constipation.

3.Dietary change: Changing the baby from liquid food to solid food at an early stage can make digestion difficult if it is also low in fiber.

4. Change in routine: Circumstances that change the routine like travel, change in weather, stress, school start time can cause reluctance to defecate.

5. Other Causes: Other causes of constipation in children include medications, allergies, family history, metabolic-digestive problems, sedentary lifestyle, lack of fluids in the body etc.

The first major symptom of constipation is having fewer than three bowel movements in a week. Other symptoms to look out for in a child are: hard stools, difficulty passing stools, painful stools, bowel sounds, abdominal pain – swelling, bleeding during stools.

If the child is often irritable and seems to stand on tiptoe uncomfortably while passing stool, it is a sign of constipation.

Understandably, they are trying to avoid defecation due to constipation. Painful bowel movements can lead to child retention of stool.

This condition can be cured by simple methods such as a high fiber diet, drinking more fluids, encouraging physical activity, changing bowel habits as needed, delaying toilet training, and home remedies.

If constipation persists for more than a week, the skin around the anus may split and cause pain, rectal prolapse, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

If these conditions persist for more than a week, parents should consult a doctor immediately.
